Domande frequenti

Cosa installa Blinken sulle mie macchine?

Come chiedo un rimborso?

I rimborsi li gestisce Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com.

Quali NAS sono supportati?

QNAP, Synology, TrueNAS e altri.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to use Blinken?
  • An iPhone with iOS 18 or later.
  • The machines to update, with SSH: Proxmox VE hosts and Linux machines running Debian, Ubuntu, Raspberry Pi OS and derivatives, or Fedora, RHEL, Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux and CentOS Stream 9 or later. Physical, VMs or containers.
  • On Linux machines, a user with passwordless sudo; on Proxmox, the root user.
  • An always-on machine for the agent: the app can create a Debian container on Proxmox, or use a machine with Debian 12 or later, Ubuntu 22.04 or later, or a Raspberry Pi.
  • The iPhone on the same network as the agent, or connected through a VPN.
What does the agent do?

It's a small service (Ansible plus an HTTPS API) running on one of your machines, so updates keep going even with the app closed.

First it runs a check: what needs updating or rebooting, without installing anything. It shows you the plan and, once you confirm, updates one machine at a time in rack order: it skips the ones already up to date, reboots only when needed, stops and remounts NAS shares and containers around reboots, and stops at the first error. If you like, it runs the check by itself on the days and at the time you choose.

Every command run on your machines can be reviewed in the app.

What does Blinken install on my machines?

The agent's public SSH key and a few helper scripts in /usr/local/sbin and /var/lib/homelab-update. Agent › Delete agent… uninstalls the agent and, if you want, removes the key and scripts from all machines.

Can I try it without a homelab?

Yes: on the welcome screen tap Try an example first. It's a pretend rack: check and update are simulated and nothing touches your network. To leave it: Agent › Exit the example.

What counts toward the 5-machine limit?

Without Pro, Blinken updates the first 5 machines in rack order. Proxmox hosts and Linux machines count, VMs and containers included; the agent's machine and NAS devices don't.

The others stay in the rack as not connected: check and update skip them. Automatic check, history, NAS and clusters work without Pro too.

What is Blinken Pro?

It removes the machine limit. It's a one-time purchase, no subscription: Agent › Version › Upgrade to Pro. Family Sharing isn't available.

How do I restore my purchase on another iPhone?

Sign in to the App Store with the same Apple Account and tap Agent › Version › Restore purchases.

How do I ask for a refund?

Refunds are handled by Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com.

Which NAS devices are supported?

QNAP, Synology, TrueNAS and others. Blinken doesn't update the NAS firmware: it unmounts the NAS from your machines, waits while you update it from its own panel and remounts it when it's back online. With SSH it can also just reboot it.

The app can't reach the agent
  • Check that the iPhone is on the same network as the agent, or on a VPN.
  • In Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network, Blinken must be on.
  • Reserve the agent's address in your router (DHCP) so it doesn't change.
  • On the agent's machine: systemctl status homelab-agent.
